Lacy Banks, the preacher of Chicago hoops, who covered the Bulls for the Chicago Sun-Times after being hired as the paper’s first African-American sportswriter in 1972, has died at the age of 68 from a host of health issues including prostate cancer, a brain tumor and heart disease. Many writers both in Chicago and out paid homage to Banks today. I myself only read him on occasion, but he is a pioneer and will have a lasting legacy in Chicago. I wish there were more like him.
Sam Smith, himself an institution on Chicago professional hoops and a good friend of Banks, wrote about his passing for Bulls.com
Micahel Wilbon writes for ESPN Chicago because Lacy was not just a pioneer, but was a role model for his own career in sportswriting.
J.A. Adande his own paean to Banks up for ESPN’s True Hoop Blog, where he starts the piece off with the ubiquitous quote “‘I always liked you, Lacy.”’
The Chicago Sun-Times’ Toni Ginnetti wrote about Banks as a trailblazer for African-American sportswriters, and as a “unique pioneer.”
Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune describes Banks as an ‘”old-time writer with a big personality.’”
Banks covered the Bulls for the entirety of Michael Jordan’s time there and even into the Derrick Rose era. As Steve Aschburner mentions at the Hang Time Blog, he once told a colleague at the Sun-Times, “‘They pay me to watch Jordan.”’ I love that quote because it shows how Banks didn’t let his unique perspective on sports (from journalist row), go to his head. He realized how lucky he had been to witness the GOAT’s time in the league and get paid for it. I wish more sportswriters were like this about their positions within the game.
